Deciding to purchase a billards pool table (I know the proper spelling is billiards. Many people search under the wrong spelling.) can be a very exciting yet challenging time. Although there are many styles and sizes to choose from, it’s important to consider not only the style that you want, but the amount of space that you have to work with.
A regulation sized pool table which is 4.5' by 9' may not be practical in a small room. Ensuring that there is plenty of room to comfortably play a game will greatly improve your overall experience.
The general guideline in determining the amount of space needed in a room is to add two lengths of a standard cue stick (usually 57"-58") to the length and width of the table that your interested in. This will insure that once the table is centered in the room, all four sides will have at least on pool cue stick length away from the table. In some instances, a smaller cue stick can be purchased for rooms of limited sizes. It’s also important to consider not only the size of the room, but to take into consideration the size of any additional furniture that may be present in the room. Different items such as: a bar, entertainment centers, stools or even tables can greatly change the usable area of a room.
Foundation support beams in many basements may also interfere with the open dimensions of a pool room. Although every basement is different, there are times when the pool table placement can work around the beams. If your only option is a room with a beam try to place the table so that the beam is at the side of the table and not at either end. If the table end must rest near the beam, place the table so that the beam is opposite of the rack end. Break shots can be accomplished at an angle often leading to beneficial breaks. Also the majority of shots occur at the rack end of the table.
Hopefully, your pool room will provide enough space to comfortable fit the billards pool table and additional pieces of furniture, that give the room a comfortable and practical feel. After all, providing space for bar tables away from the pool table not only provides friends a place to relax with their drinks, but it also ensures that drinks don’t find their way near the table.
