To play better pool it is important to understand the basics of the game and how to get the most out of each shot. As with all sports, concentrating on your technique will ultimately improve your game. With pool, technique is often equated with excellent control over the cue ball.

While many different pool and billiards games exist, with all games it is important to have good control over the cue ball. Such as in 8-ball, the resting position of the cue ball after a shot, also call the leave, is a very important strategy to use to enable the player to make the next shot. Also important to consider if you cannot make the shot that you do not leave your opponent in an advantageous location.

English is another technique that helps players maintain control of the cue ball and the shot. English is the side spin of the cue ball occurring when the ball is hit on the right or left of the center. This can create a change in direction of the object ball and the cue ball after impact.

Follow is another technique that changes the speed of the spin. Follow can widen the angle of reflection of the cue ball from the object ball. Understanding how to modify the angle of reflection can allow players to set themselves up for a better subsequent shot.

Using a draw shot, where a backwards spin is put on the cue ball, it causes the angle of reflection to narrow after the impact on the object ball. To create a draw, the player hits the cue ball under the middle of the vertical level surface. A draw can slow the rate of the cue ball and even create a follow to the object ball.

By using these techniques to play better pool the control of the cue ball is maximized. The straight shots will always perform as expected, but adding these techniques of spin and friction separates the amateurs from the professionals.
