The game of pool billiards is a fun hobby and past time that has a long history and a great following. In almost any city, a billiards table can be found and games can be played. From pick-up games in a local pub, to tournaments in Las Vegas, pool or billiards has a following of participants.

The draw of the game is the apparent simplicity, but the staying power comes from the complexities of the game. While the concept and the rules are quite simple, understanding the idiosyncrasies of the game takes a great deal of practice and a good knowledge of the mathematical principles involved.

The game of billiards has evolved over centuries of play, from originally being a yard game to being played on a table, from the use of a mallet to a leather tipped cue. Because billiards evolved in different locations throughout Europe and was then brought over to the America’s, the World Pool Billiard Association (WPA) has been instrumental in standardizing the game for international play.

The standardization of the equipment used in billiards games can also be attributed to the WPA, who has regulated the size of the balls, the placement of the pockets and the proportion of the table. Not all cue sports are the same and a table designed for snooker may be different from a standard billiards table, billiards enthusiasts are often willing to adapt.

With the advent of the internet, billiards has taken on another form. Online billiards players have many options of virtual play, from online tournaments with cash prizes, to simple games against a program. Players from around the world can play each other in matches, communicate with message boards and chat rooms and improve both their regular and online play.

The popularity of billiards as a sport and past time will likely continue to grow despite the interest in other games, as it is a classic game that can be enjoyed throughout a lifetime of play.
