Learning the Right Racking Strategy for 8 and 9 Ball Pool
The rack refers to the wooden or plastic frame that is used to position the balls when the game is to be started. The racks are almost always triangular in shape and the balls are kept in it in a pattern of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with the 1 ball called as the leading ball. The triangular shape is so common that most novice players will call the racks as triangles. These racks are commonly used in variations of pool such as 8 ball, snooker, bank pool, straight pool and 1 pocket. For the 9 ball game, actually the diamond racks are to be used which place balls in them in the order of 1, 2, 3, 2 and 1, but most places will use the triangles for 9 ball too.
Professional players of pool sometimes are in debate whether racks are meant to be arranged in some specific pattern, especially for an 8 ball game. Actually speaking, there are no such fixed rules apart from the one rule that the 8 ball (and the 9 ball for a 9 ball game) has to be placed in a particular manner. Here are some things that will help you though.
If you are creating the rack for an 8 ball game, you have to make sure that you place the rack on the table positioning one ball in the topmost corner. Then you have to place two balls below it, then three and so on. Totally 15 balls will be placed in this manner. The rules are:-
The 8 ball must be in the third row in the middle position (this keeps it in the center of the rack).
The first ball can be any ball, not necessarily the 1 ball, and it must be at the apical position of the rack, which is the front position overlooking the foot spot.
At the corner positions, you have to place one stripe and one solid ball. This is done to equalize the probabilities of a solid and a strike getting sunk at the break, since these positions are the most vulnerable for a break sinking.
Only the 8 ball has a fixed position. All other balls can be randomly placed, keeping the above rule in mind.
There should be no gaps between the balls when the rack is made. This is also good for getting the ideal break.
When beginners are involved in playing 8 ball, two variations are included. These are:-
The entire outer edge contains balls that are stripes or solids.
The balls are to be placed in some pre-decided numerical order such as 1 at the foot spot and other balls following sequentially above that position. When this is done, the 11 ball and the 15 ball will occupy the corner position.
For the game of 9 ball, the rules of racking are quite different. This is obvious because there are only nine balls in this game. You can get special racks for 9 ball, but people use the same 8 ball racks for placing their 9 ball positions too. The special 9 ball racks are shaped in the form of a diamond. The rules include placing the 1 ball at the apex and the 9 ball right in the middle position. New players at 9 ball will try to place the balls in a sequential order like 1 at the foot position and the other balls following sequentially after that, but in verity, apart from the 1 and the 9 balls all other balls can be placed in any manner you choose.
Whether you are making a rack for an 8 ball or a 9 ball game, it is important that you keep the balls as tightly placed as possible. Also, roll the rack a bit so that the 1 ball comes at the exact middle position of the table which is indicated by the dot in the billiard table. Then, using all fingers (no thumbs) of your hand, roll the balls as close as possible by pushing on the back roll. This will bring them in a tight placement. The 1 ball has always to be on the dot because the tight rack makes it difficult for the opposite player to hit a ball on the break.
